Frequently asked questions

Baby & Toddler Hats

What sizes do the baby hats come in?

Four sizes: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 1-2 years, with an adjustable pull inside so the fit grows with your little one. (Some styles come in 0-3m and 3-6m only)

Will the hat protect my baby from the sun?

The soft linen brim shades little faces from the Australian sun, and the neck tie keeps it on when bub decides hats are optional. For long stints outdoors, pair it with shade and sun-safe clothing.

Can I wash the hat?

Yes, it's machine washable, and it folds flat to fit in your nappy bag without losing its shape. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent free of brighteners, and line dry in the shade

Do the hats match the carriers?

They do. Our hats come in the same hand-dyed colourways as our carriers, slings and swaddles, so you can match bub's hat to your carry.

What are the hats made from?

Buttery soft handwoven linen with a soft cotton lining, gentle on brand-new skin.

Babywearing Basics

What is babywearing?

Babywearing is the practice of carrying your baby in a carrier, wrap or sling, keeping your little one close while your hands stay free for everyday life. Mummas have done it for generations and the benefits for both mum and bub are incredible. From supporting baby's development, promoting bonding to providing a hands free option for mum.

What age can I start babywearing?

From birth, with the right carrier. Our Daily Carrier, Wrap Carrier and Sling Carrier all suit newborns from 3.6kg (8lb).

What is the best baby carrier in Australia?

The best baby carrier is the one that fits your body, your baby's stage and how you actually parent day to day. Mumma Etcetera carriers are ergonomic, designed in Australia, made from 100% handwoven linen and endorsed by the Australian Babywearing Association, with styles for everything from newborn snuggles to toddler hip carries.

Which baby carrier is easiest for beginners?

A clip-and-go style like our Daily Carrier is the easiest place to start: it clips on in seconds with no tying to learn. Every carrier also comes with video demos and a free one-on-one consultation with our babywearing educator, so you're never figuring it out alone.

What's the difference between a carrier, a wrap and a sling?

A structured carrier (like the Daily) uses clips for quick, everyday wear; a wrap (like our Meh Dai-style Wrap Carrier) ties around your body for a soft, close carry; A ring sling sits over one shoulder and is perfect for quick, on-the-go carries. Different stages, different styles of carrying, all ergonomic.

Which carrier is right for my baby's age?

Newborn to toddler: Daily, Wrap or Sling Carrier (3.6-15.9kg). From around 9 months: add the Hipsy (8.5-20kg) for hip carry support during the walking-but-not-always months.

Can I use a baby carrier for a 2 year old?

Yes. The Hipsy is built for toddlers from around 9 months up to 20kg, and the Daily, Wrap and Sling Carriers support up to 15.9kg.

Can dads and taller or plus-size parents use Mumma Etcetera carriers?

Absolutely. The Daily Carrier fits most (approx. size 6-20), the Wrap Carrier comes in Regular and Long (extra 50cm per strap), and slings come in a Long length (230cm), made for babywearing daddas and tall or plus-size mummas.

Daily Carrier

What is a daily baby carrier?

The daily baby carrier is a structured, clip-and-go carrier built for everyday wear. The Mumma Etcetera Daily Carrier combines the softness of a wrap with the ease of a clip, on in seconds, no tying required.

Can I use the Daily Carrier with a newborn?

Yes. The Daily Carrier is ergonomic and suitable from newborn, from 3.6kg (8lb) up to 15.9kg (35lb), supporting the natural, hip-healthy M-position from the very first weeks. Follow the T.I.C.K.S. safe-carrying checklist, and trust your mumma instincts.

Can my baby face outward in the Daily Carrier?

Yes, once your little one has strong head control and can sit independently, at around 6 months. Before then, carry them facing in, close enough to kiss. However if your baby starts to get tired or upset, always turn them back to inward facing.

Is the Daily Carrier comfortable for all-day wear?

It's designed for exactly that. Wide shoulder straps in a cross-back style, spreads your baby's weight evenly, and the breathable handwoven linen is soft enough to wear from breakfast to bedtime. One size fits most (approx. size 6-20).

How long will the Daily Carrier last us?

From 3.6kg newborn days up to 15.9kg, so well into the toddler years. With an adjustable knee-to-knee base and headrest that grows with your baby. Around 9 months, many mummas add the Hipsy for quick toddler hip carry.

Is a clip carrier easier than a wrap?

For many mummas, yes. The Daily Carrier clips on in seconds with no tying or wrapping to learn, while still giving you that soft, close, wrap-style feel. And if you'd like a hand, every carrier comes with video demos and a free one-on-one consultation with our babywearing educator.

Fabric & Care

What are Mumma Etcetera products made from?

100% handwoven linen, hand-dyed by skilled artisans in India. It's natural, breathable and gentle on brand-new skin, made for the Australian climate. Our Daily, Wrap and Hipsy Carriers all have 100% cotton padding, cotton stitching and cotton webbing.

Is linen good for babies with sensitive skin?

Yes. Linen is a natural, hypoallergenic fibre that's breathable and temperature-regulating, cool in summer, warm in winter, and it softens with every wash.

Will the linen soften over time?

It will. Our linen is soft from the start and becomes even softer with wear and washing, developing character as it goes.

Why does my piece look slightly different from the photos?

Because it's handwoven and hand-dyed, every piece is beautifully imperfect and uniquely its own. Slight variations in weave and colour aren't flaws, they're the character of the fabric, and it only gets lovelier as it softens and gently fades over time.

How do I wash my carrier, sling or swaddle?

Cold water, hand wash or gentle cycle, with a mild detergent free of brighteners. Line dry in the shade, no dry cleaning, and a hot steam iron will soften the linen right up. A garment bag is a lovely extra layer of care.

Help & Support

How do I learn to use my carrier?

Every carrier comes with comprehensive video demos on our How to Wear pages, and we offer free one-on-one video consultations with our Babywearing Educator if you'd like personal help. We're always here, that's the whole point.

How do I contact Mumma Etcetera?

You can email info@mummaetc.com - Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm AEST x

Are any of your products stocked in a store?

We are an online store however we do have some of our products stocked across Australia at The Memo as well as independent small businesses. You can see a full list of stockists here.

Do your carriers suit a hot climate?

Yes! We are a Gold Coast QLD based company so this is something that was important to us. All of our carriers are made from 100% linen which is naturally breathable, temperature regulating and moisture wicking, making it an ideal choice for Australia's warmer climate. The linen will also become softer with every wash and wear .

What if my carrier is faulty or damaged?

We will replace faulty/damaged items free of charge (where possible) or give you a full refund of the purchase amount, excluding costs incurred for shipping, provided the item hasn’t been misused and the care instructions have been followed. Claims should be made within a reasonable time of the purchase date with the original invoice or proof of purchase.

Why does my carrier material have pulls?

Because our carriers are made from 100% handwoven and hand-dyed linen, every piece is beautifully imperfect and uniquely its own. Slight variations in the weave are not flaws, they are the character of the fabric.

Hipsy Carrier

What is the Hipsy carrier?

The Hipsy is a ring-sling-inspired hip carry support for toddlers, a quilted handwoven linen seat that sits on your hip and takes your child's weight through a wide, cupped shoulder strap, so you're not carrying it all on one arm.

What age is the Hipsy suitable for?

From around 9 months (approximately 8.5kg) up to 20kg, the whole "up, down, up again" stage when your toddler wants to walk, then suddenly doesn't. We reccommend using the Hipsy Carrier from 9 months onwards to ensure your baby has developed strong core strength and are able to sit unassisted.

Is the Hipsy hands-free?

No, and that's by design. The Hipsy is carry support rather than a hands-free carrier, so keep one loving hand on your little one at all times. It's made for short, frequent carries: up onto the hip, down to walk, and up again.

Does a hip carrier help with back and arm strain?

Yes. Carrying a toddler on one hip loads one side of your body; the Hipsy's supportive seat and cupped shoulder strap spreads that weight, so the school walk and the long museum afternoon stay comfortable for both of you.

What's included and what's it made from?

100% handwoven linen, hand-dyed by skilled artisans in India. With a quilted seat of 100% cotton padding, non-slip ladder lock and a matching linen storage bag. One size, easily adjustable from front and back.

Safety

Are baby carriers safe for newborn hips?

Yes, when the carrier supports the natural M-position, knees higher than bottom. Every Mumma Etcetera carrier is designed to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute's hip-healthy recommendations, and we're endorsed by the Australian Babywearing Association.

What is the T.I.C.K.S. rule?

The safe-babywearing checklist: Tight; In view at all times; Close enough to kiss; Keep chin off chest; Supported back. Run through it every time you put bub in a carrier, and trust your mumma instincts.

When can my baby face outward?

Once they have strong head control and can sit independently, around 6 months onwards. Until then, always carry facing in. However when outward facing, if your baby starts to get tired or upset, always turn them back to inward facing.

Do your products meet safety standards?

Yes. Our slings and carriers meet strict international safety standards (CPSIA and ASTM), are IHDI-approved as hip-healthy, and we're a member of the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance.

How do I swaddle my baby safely?

Snug around the chest, loose around the hips, always on their back, and stop swaddling as soon as bub shows signs of rolling, in line with Red Nose Australia's safe sleep guidance.

Sling Carrier

What is a ring sling?

A ring sling is a single piece of fabric worn over one shoulder and secured through two rings, holding your baby snug against your body. It's one of the quickest, most minimal ways to carry, perfect for the early days at home and quick trips out.

What age can I use the sling from?

From newborn (3.6kg) right through to toddlerhood (15.9kg). The single-layer linen is lightweight and perfect for those first months, and supportive enough to keep going.

Is a baby sling safe for newborns?

Yes, worn correctly. Keep bub high, tight and close enough to kiss, following the T.I.C.K.S. checklist. Our slings meet strict international safety standards (CPSIA and ASTM) and are approved by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as hip-healthy.

Can I breastfeed in the sling?

Yes, the sling is made for feeding on the go. Lower bub to breast height, feed, then lift them back up high and tight when you're done.

Which length should I choose?

Standard suits most mummas. Long (230cm, an extra 40cm) is recommended for babywearing daddas and tall or plus-size mummas.

What is the sling made from?

One layer of buttery soft, 100% handwoven linen, hand-dyed by artisans in India, light enough for warm Australian days and it folds up small enough to live in your bag.

Swaddles

What size is the swaddle and what's it made from?

90cm x 90cm, made from buttery soft linen handwoven in India from European flax. It's breathable, hypoallergenic and right for every season.

How do I swaddle my baby safely?

Swaddle snug around the chest but loose around the hips, always place bub on their back, and stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling. We align our guidance with Red Nose Australia's safe sleep advice, and there's a step-by-step guide on our blog.

Why linen instead of muslin or cotton?

Linen is naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, cool in summer, warm in winter, and it gets even softer with every wash, ageing gracefully alongside your little one.

Can I use the swaddle for anything else?

Endlessly. Pram shade, feeding cover, play mat layer, tummy-time blanket, and later, the comforter your toddler won't part with.

How do I care for the swaddle?

Wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent free of brighteners, and line dry in the shade. Slight variations in the weave and dye are part of its handwoven beauty.

Wrap Carrier

What is the Wrap Carrier?

The Mumma Etcetera Wrap Carrier is based on the traditional Meh Dai design, the softness and closeness of a wrap with the support of a structured carrier. It ties rather than clips, and holds bub beautifully snug.

What age is the Wrap Carrier suitable for?

From newborn (3.6kg / 8lb) through to toddlerhood (15.9kg / 35lb), with a variety of carry positions to suit you and your baby along the way.

Is the Wrap Carrier safe for my baby's hips?

Yes. It's approved by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as a hip-healthy product, supporting the natural M-position. Follow the T.I.C.K.S. checklist for every carry.

Is a wrap carrier hard to learn?

There's a small learning curve compared to a clip carrier, but our comprehensive video demos walk you through it step by step, and every carrier comes with free one-on-one consultations with a babywearing educator if you'd like a hand.

Which size should I choose?

Regular suits up to dress size 14 (AU/UK); Long adds 50cm to each strap for size 14 and up. If you're unsure, we recommend sizing up.

What is the Wrap Carrier made from?

Strong, supportive 100% handwoven linen with a cross-back for comfort, soft enough to wear around the house, and it folds up to fit in your bag.
